  As a student in Grade One, I never expected to be writing compositions in English so soon. But when the time came, I felt both nervous and excited as it was my first time writing in a foreign language. In this article, I will share my experience of writing my first English composition in Grade One, the challenges I faced and the lessons I learned.

  The topic given to us for the composition was “My Favorite Season”. Since we had already studied the topic in our English class, I felt confident that I would be able to write a good composition. However, as I sat down to write, I realized that I did not have enough vocabulary to express my ideas in English. My initial attempts seemed childish and insufficient, and I struggled to find the right words to convey my message.

  To overcome this challenge, I decided to use a bilingual dictionary. I looked up the words I wanted to use in English and found their Chinese equivalents, and vice versa. This helped me to learn new words and phrases and to use them correctly in my composition. I also asked my English teacher for guidance and feedback on my writing, which further improved my writing skills.

  Another challenge I faced was organizing my ideas into a coherent piece of writing. In Chinese, we usually write compositions in a structured way, with clear opening, body, and closing paragraphs. However, I soon found out that English compositions were different. In English, there are different writing styles and techniques, such as descriptive, narrative, and persuasive writing, which require different approaches to organizing ideas.

  To address this challenge, I read different types of English compositions and analyzed their structures. I also tried out different techniques in my practice writing, such as using transition words, providing examples, and using metaphors and similes to enhance my writing.

  Once I had drafted my composition, I had to revise it several times. I realized that my initial writing was full of errors in grammar, spelling, and punctuation. I also discovered that I had repeated some phrases and used awkward sentence constructions. So, I went back and made corrections and changes to my composition until I was satisfied with the final draft.

  My experience of writing my first English composition not only helped me to develop my English writing skills but also taught me some valuable lessons. Firstly, I learned that writing in a foreign language requires a lot of effort and practice. Secondly, I understood that vocabulary, sentence structure, and organization are crucial for effective writing. Lastly, I discovered that seeking feedback from teachers and peers, using resources such as dictionaries, and reading widely can help improve writing skills.

  In conclusion, writing my first English composition was a valuable and challenging experience for me. It helped me to identify my strengths and weaknesses in writing in a foreign language and to learn new skills and techniques. I hope my experience will inspire other students to embrace writing with enthusiasm and determination, even if it is a new language.
